VTA SEMINAR - GERMANY 2023: The birth of Professor Shearbomb
Written by Phil Johnson of Professor Shearbomb Ltd
In May 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) Seminars held at the IML Factory in Wiesloch, Germany. Traveling from the UK with two friends, we were full of excitement at the prospect of meeting the renowned Dr. Prof. Claus Mattheck.
Dr. Mattheck, a legend in the arboricultural world, is celebrated for his extensive research in biomechanics and his unique ability to bring tree biology to life.
Having heard about his engaging and often humorous approach to tree science, we knew this was going to be a memorable experience. Plus, with Dr. Mattheck no longer traveling internationally, the chance to see him in person was one we couldn’t miss.
The seminars were everything we’d hoped for and more. From hands-on sessions to lively discussions with other international arboricultural students, each day offered invaluable insights and camaraderie. Meeting Dr. Mattheck was a true highlight—he was generous with his time, even signing books for us.
And in a moment I’ll always treasure, he gave me the nickname “Professor Shearbomb,” which I now wear as a badge of honor! The trip was not only an enriching experience in learning but also a celebration of our shared passion for arboriculture, and it has left me feeling more inspired than ever.
